If you were approved for a federal tax extension, then the State of Nebraska will automatically grant you a six month tax extension. If you need to make a state tax payment, you'll need to submit Nebraska Form 4868N (PDF). If you're married and filed separate returns, you need to send separate applications if you and your spouse want extensions of time. Send in a separate Form 4868N for each person. Attach a copy of your IRS 4868 Extension form to your tax return when filed.

Filing a Nebraska tax extension will not grant you more time to pay any tax balance due. Your balance must be paid by April 15 to avoid possible penalties.

If you already received an approval notification from ExpressExtension, and you don't need to make a tax payment, then you're all done.

The State of Nebraska will automatically grant you a 6 month tax extension (5 months for partnerships/LLCs) if your business was approved for a federal tax extension (IRS Form 7004) and there are no outstanding tax payments due.

However, you will need to submit Nebraska Form 7004N (PDF) if your business needs to make a state tax payment or were not approved for a federal tax extension. If you do not need to make a tax payment and have received an approval notification from ExpressExtension, there’s nothing more to do.

Be sure to attach a copy of your IRS 7004 Extension form to your tax return when filing.

Filing a Nebraska tax extension will not provide you with additional time to pay any tax balance due, which must be paid by your original filing deadline or interest and other payment penalties may apply.
